grandma The internet has finally Arrived! Grandma is online!

My grandmother and I were talking about her new computer over dinner one night and she mentioned her love for the Internet. She told me all about how whenever she wants to know about something, she can just look it up and she has all the information she needs. She was so amazed at how easy it was and she couldn’t believe that she had been without it for so long.

It seemed so commonplace for me to have such easy access to information. I forget that there was a time when I couldn’t get my email on my phone or instant directions in my palm or incessant status updates from my Facebook friends (I can usually do without those).

Beyond social networking and help when we are completely lost, the internet has become inseparable from our professional and personal lives.

For a while I wasn’t able to get on the internet from my computer and I thought I was going to literally lose my mind. How many of you are that dependent on the internet? Don’t worry, those who are totally sane without the internet are the minority.

I recently read the book Technopoly by Neil Postman. It discusses our growing dependence on technology. By the way, it was written in the 1980’s, so he would probably be freaking out now. I think the main point of the book is that we need to be aware of our technology intake so that it won’t take over our lives.

The web is a great tool and it is hard to go a day without it. But I survived several days without it and I am here to tell my story. But I still love technology.
