The point of an internship is to give us direction in our careers

Everyone talks about how you can’t expect to land a good job unless you have a good internship. They rarely mention that you also can’t be a douche, but I digress.

I think we are missing the point when we talk about internships getting us good jobs. The point of an internship is to give us direction in our careers.

I don’t know about you, but I want more than a job. I want a career. The thought process during your internship should be more along the lines of “Do I want my career to be spent doing this?”

My thought is that any internship you do will be invaluable and that you should milk it for all it’s worth; build your portfolio, network like there’s no tomorrow. But don’t think that your career path has to follow what you did in your internship. Make sure you love whatever you decide to do.

For those of you who are just fulfilling your internship assignment, I sure hope you land a job. For those of you who are looking for more, I hope you land the career that suits you.
